80,000 Hours has a career review making the case for AI policy as an impactful area to work in and giving some advice and pointers to organizations. You can also apply to talk with them for career advice, and their job board lists some AI policy positions.
AI Safety Fundamentals has a curriculum on AI governance that you can use as an introduction to the field.
AI Governance & Strategy: Priorities, talent gaps, & opportunities lists some priority research areas along with skills and backgrounds that are in high demand in those areas.
The longtermist AI governance landscape: a basic overview gives a strategic overview of research directions.
AI Governance Needs Technical Work lists several kinds of technical research projects relevant to AI policy.
You can look at the Centre for the Governance of AI’s research page to get a general sense of what people in the field think about.
